In 2015, 3.9 million U.S. workers were doing it remotely. That number has since grown to 4.7 million today. Remote work continues to grow, and if 2021 has shown us anything, that number isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

Luckily for job seekers, there are heaps of remote companies hiring right now.

Before we dive into all of the great remote companies hiring right now, let’s cover a few of the basics.

What is a remote company?

Remote companies operate on a remote-first mindset. This means that remote is the default. From meetings to quarterly events.
It also means that employees work outside of traditional office environments, including:

  • Coworking spaces
  • Home offices
  • Coffee shops

It doesn’t mean that companies don’t have an office at all. It just means that employees aren’t expected to work from a company office.

What companies allow you to work remotely?

Companies who brand themselves as the following will allow you to work remotely:

  • Remote
  • Distributed
  • Flex-work
  • Hybrid

Jump to learn about which companies allow you to work remotely here.

Fully remote vs. partially remote vs. distributed companies: what’s the difference?

Fully remote companies are just that: remote.
This doesn’t mean they’re spread out across the globe. In fact, many remote companies choose to stay within a specific time zone, state, country, or continent.
These organizations have no dedicated offices for employees to go to.

Partially remote companies take on a more hybrid approach where some employees are remote, while others are in-office. These companies still operate with a remote-first mindset, meaning that they act as if they're 100% remote.

Distributed companies are those who span the globe and can be fully or partially remote. These companies will general work across several time zones
A few companies who have been integral to the rise of remote work include GitLab, Buffer, and Zapier (all of which are fully remote and distributed).

What makes remote companies great?

There’s a lot that goes into running a great remote company. The best remote organizations are ones that:

1. Great remote companies understand and empathize with the problems remote workers face

Buffer’s 2020 State of Remote Work found that 20% of remote workers struggle most with loneliness and 18% struggle with unplugging.

Loneliness and the inability to unplug is a common struggle for remote workers globally. But, great remote companies understand these challenges, put procedures in place, and foster cultures that help to reduce these struggles.

When he started to feel a bit down about the amount of time he was spending at home, Marcus Wermuth, Engineering Manager at Buffer said,

“I recently started every Friday going to a coffee shop in the morning and working from there until lunch. Being in a different setting, there’s a different energy. And Buffer helps with that, we have a stipend for coffee shops each month.”

Buffer understands the problems that their teams face (and will face) and makes accommodations that help minimize these struggles.

2. Great remote companies can build a great culture from anywhere in the world

When you’re not going for constant coffee walks with coworkers or talking around a lunch table, building meaningful connections can be difficult.

And, while it’s not the same, remote-first companies know how to keep employees connected and aligned.

Take InVision, for starters. Apart from the typical fun and interest-focused Slack channels like #dog-lovers, #cat-lovers, #wine-and-cheese club, InVision has a #house-swaps-invbnb channel.

When launched, it enabled team members to trade homes and see new places around the world.

How cool is that?!

On top of that, their entire workplace culture is centered around employee happiness. In fact, they even have a Director of Employee Happiness on the payroll.

3. Great remote companies embrace asynchronous communication

Asynchronous communication is communication that doesn’t need an immediate response.

This is a powerful way to communicate with others. Asynchronous communication empowers you to:

  • Spend less time in unnecessary meetings
  • Gain more deep focus time back in your day
  • Be more productive
  • Work with colleagues across every timezone

This doesn’t mean that asynchronous is the only way you’ll be communicating with your team. It just means that, when you do communicate, it’ll be with purpose.

Now that we’ve got that covered, let’s dive into the top remote companies hiring in 2021!
